Nokia Launches Comes With Music Service

In September, Nokia had announced their ‘Comes With Music’ service that was going to also be incorporated into some of their new handsets and be launched first in the UK. At the Nokia Remix event held in London and Singapore, Nokia announced the debut of this service. Customers who buy a Comes With Music device will be able to explore and enjoy a diverse catalog of music of international and local artists with unlimited access to millions of tracks for a year, keeping the music once the year is over.
"Comes With Music sets a precedent for consumer value and convenience that the rest of the digital entertainment industry is already copying," said Tero Ojanperä, executive vice president and head of the Nokia entertainment and communities business. "Trying out a music recommendation is spontaneous as customers can download without worrying about the cost of an album or a track - the freedom and simplicity of the service is unparalleled. And Comes With Music gives you unlimited access to the millions of tracks in the Nokia Music Store and the music is all yours to keep - because it's not a revolution unless you get to keep your music."

Comes With Music will also feature a tremendous selection of independent music, courtesy of deals with The Orchard, Beggars Group, IODA, the Ministry of Sound, PIAS and Pinnacle. These companies join Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group in supporting Comes With Music. Nokia has also secured music publishing rights from CELAS on behalf of EMI Music Publishing, GEMA on behalf of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, SACEM on behalf of Universal Music Publishing, as well as the MCPS-PRS Alliance.

The United Kingdom will be the first market to offer Comes With Music with sales planned to start on October 16, 2008. The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic Comes With Music edition is expected to cost Rs. 10,747 (GBP 129.95).

top 4 desktop search suites

Desktop search has certainly come a long way. From merely indexing your files and documents, today’s desktop suites are far more capable. They can easily index images, office documents, email, searches, maintain a list of searches, keep a timeline of your PC, and more.

Seeing this list of features, one may conclude that these are paid products. However, this could not be further from the truth. Some of the best desktop suites are free. Not only do they continue to evolve, they get timely updates and are in many ways now essential for a power user. Here's a list of four of the best.
Google search for the desktop. Nothing needs to be said beyond those five words. This application offering from the company that put search on the map is a polished performer that has a huge list of usable features. Apart from your files, it can index your office documents, outlook email, and surfing history.

In its latest incarnation (version 5) Google Desktop is closely integrated with its online services. While this may bother a few people, it's a welcome move as it allows you to pull up documents from across various PCs (at home or work). Tracking that pesky document you wrote a year ago was never easier.

new sony e-book reader light and powerful touchscreen.

Sony Corp. unveiled a new e-book reader Thursday with a built-in light and a touch-sensitive display, features that set it apart from Amazon.com Inc.'s competing Kindle reader.

The PRS-700 is Sony's third model of the Reader, and will go on sale at the end of the month for about $400. It represents further experimentation on the part of manufacturers trying to find the right formula to make e-book readers more than a niche product. Neither Sony nor Amazon have revealed sales figures for their readers.
Like the earlier models and the Kindle, the PRS-700 has a six-inch screen of "electronic ink," which presents dark gray text on a light gray background.
Unlike the liquid-crystal displays of laptops and cell-phones, e-ink displays cannot be lit from behind, but the PRS-700 has light-emitting diodes that can be turned on to illuminate the screen from the sides.
The 10-ounce (283-gram) device also comes with a stylus, which can be used to highlight text or make handwritten notes. It can hold 350 books in its internal memory, and more in a memory card.

The PRS-700 does not have an equivalent of the Kindle's signature feature: wireless access to Amazon's e-book store for near-instant book downloads. Instead, books are loaded on to the device by connecting it to a PC.

Steve Haber, president of Sony's Digital Reading Business Division, said the company aims to have a wireless version, but it would have to work with multiple book vendors.

While the Kindle downloads books only from Amazon's store, Sony is differentiating itself by de-emphasizing its own store and opening up its Readers to e-books from other vendors.

Microsoft Uses Search Prizes to Close Google Gap

In a bid to close the ever-widening gap with Google on Internet searches, Microsoft has started offering consumers redeemable points for using its search service.

The programme was launched as new web traffic figures Thursday showed that Google had extended its lead to 63 percent of the US search market in August. Yahoo came in with a 19.6 percent share, followed by Microsoft with an 8.3 percent share.

Microsoft hopes that its new SearchPerks program will help counter the trend by giving consumers, who enroll in the program, tickets for any searches they do using Microsoft's Live Search service. The virtual tickets can be redeemed for prizes, such as airline miles, music downloads and games for Microsoft's XBox video game system.

The launch of SearchPerks followed the introduction in May of Live Search Cashback, a program that pays cash rebates to customers who find and buy products using the software giant's search service.

Microsoft said that tests showed that people were three times more likely to use Live Search when they were offered redeemable points than when they weren't.

"People like to engage with us a lot more when they use SearchPerks," says Frederick Savoye, a senior director on Microsoft's search team.

However the promotion will remain an experiment for now, limited to the first 250,000 users in the US that download a web application that records how many searches they do daily on Google, Yahoo or Microsoft.

To maintain privacy, the program only tracks the number of searches and not the type of searches people do. SearchPerk users get one "ticket" for every search done on Microsoft, and can receive up to 25 tickets a day.

The company has not yet determined how many points will be needed to claim prizes. The program is currently available only for Internet Explorer 6 or higher.

Widespread Podding

An Apple-HCL tie-up should increase penetration, but prices still rule higher then elsewhere.

Apple’s terrible distribution network in India got a significant fillip with the company’s recent tie-up with the company’s recent tie-up with HCL info systems to distribute the ipod here.

Even through this tie-up has not meant any reduction in the end-price of the ipod in India (Rs.4000 for the 512 MB ipod shuffle to Rs.23, 000 for the 60GB video ipod), which is still much higher then its price in the US thanks to sundry duties that the government sees fit to charge, it does mean that legal Apple ipod will now be available in over 300 towns and cities across the country, along with a support network. This, say company officials, means warranties, after sales service, and easy availability at all major music stores and consumer electronic outlets

However, for the time being, you will still end up going to the gray market if you want those must have ipod accessories like the shure in-ear buds—since these best sellers are nowhere close to Indian stories as of low .

HCL has also launched www.hcllive.com, a website clearly inspired by Apple iTunes online music store. Even through you can download music and videos from this site (Rs 5 per song), it has extremely clunky interface that does not display properly on all browsers.

Hopefully, Steve Jobs, CEO of apple computer, will remember the country he came to as a young man searching for the meaning of life and give us a proper itunes store. May be a flagship Apple store like the one he just open in Manhattan won’t be such a bad idea either .

So yes, the ipod is officially here but you’re basically still better off buying this charmer (of any configuration) and its accessories abroad.
